The brief for this project was to work with 4 children who had won their school garden design competition. The final design was to incorporate as many of their individual design ideas as possible witin the very tight budget available. Above all, the garden was to provide a place for children to come for quiet relaxation, was to provide colour peaking in early to late summer to encourage as many butterflies as possible and to facilitate a sense ofpositivity and wellbeing.
The 4 children helped measure the garden and were invited to comment on the final design concepts. They particularly liked the tree seat and entrance arbour. To involve and engage as many children as possible in the garden different sensory elements were included. A wooden art wall was incorporated to provide space for children to show garden art they are to make during their art classes.
Plants with different foliage textures were planted to encourage touch and interaction. The arbour was designed to give a sense of atmosphere with climbing fragrant jasmine adding fragrance to be enjoyed while sitting on the friendship bench.
The school are keen to expand their existing gardening club which has previously centered around their Vegetable garden. A number of children and their families had a very fun day helping to plant the garden and some were keen to take an active role in it’s maintenance.
