Following a new kitchen installation the clients requested help with integrating the house with the garden. With new bifold doors, the small existing terrace needed updating and also needed to be given a sense of purpose and place. The terrace was widened and raised flush with the level of the kitchen floor and a seating area in front of the bifold’s was demarcated with stone sets and planting areas to break up the significant length of the terrace. Low evergreen hedging planted along the edge of the terrace provides a safety barrier to the level drop. A wide border was then created in front of the terrace at the driveway level. Plants including tall ornamental grasses were repeated along the length of the border to provide height, colour, and movement to be enjoyed from the kitchen, terrace and driveway through the majority of the year. The border was also extended along the existing dining room terrace in order to create a connection and unity between the two areas. The existing screen fence that was originally creating a safety barrier to the dining terrace was replaced with powder coated steel railings and oak posts which allow the planting and garden beyond to be viewed and enjoyed whilst dining.
Existing borders along the driveway were widened and replanted. The principal aim of the plant design was to integrate and unite the once disparate areas, to connect the garden to the house and to provide interest, colour movement and pollinators into the garden through the year.
