The brief for this project was to design a garden for a newly built townhouse that was to be low maintenance, of a simple and symmetrical layout, and provide seating areas which would help to maximise the light conditions in the garden throughout the year.
The design simply divides the garden into three areas and consequently creates the illusion of greater space. A coffee table and chairs were positioned at the far end of the garden in order to take advantage of the early sunlight, and a custom- made bench sits within the middle section; a perfect spot to enjoy the shade-loving Acer above.
Sitting just outside of the kitchen, the main dining terrace is bordered by a softly-coloured tapestry of foliage, designed to provide a sense of calm and soft rhythm too. This arrangement of planting will not only create movement, but colour, fragrance and constant interest as well throughout the seasons.
Both plants and materials were carefully selected with intention. Species such as the sedum placed on the shed roof were decided upon to encourage pollinators into the garden. The hard landscaping materials reflect the local Bath stone, and the Oak sleepers provide minimalist demarcation which help guide one into the planted areas. Custom built by Ilya Shirley-Folland, the beautiful crafted bench was designed to echo the wood of the shed adjacent.
